Ben Stokes, Alex Hales named in England's ODI squad for Australia series

Ben Stokes and Alex Hales have been named in England's one-day global squad for the five-match series against Australia that follows the Ashes, with the head coach Trevor Bayliss mindful that Stokes's eventual return will bring "a circus".

England reaffirmed on Thursday it will not settle on any form of punishment - nor contemplate Stokes' return - until he is either charged or cleared over the Bristol brawl that left another man with a fractured eye socket.

Bairstow, Joe Root, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes and Jake Ball are the only members of England's test squad who will stay on for the ODI series.

Australia will host England in the first of five-match One-Day International (ODI) series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on January 14.

Selectors said in a statement they were advised to name their strongest squad, and picked the pair accordingly.

That means Stokes is included, even though the all-rounder is now the subject of an European Central Bank suspension as he waits to hear whether he will be charged for his involvement in a disorder that took place in Bristol in September.

Bayliss admitted Stokes's potential appearance in Australia could be a distraction for the team.

Coach Trevor Bayliss said: "That's been discussed - but whenever he comes back it's going to be a bit of a circus for sure". Whether it's any more of a circus than it's already been, it's hard to say.

"We've got to take a decision but I think the best way is to go with the two guys who have taken over".

The England all-rounder is now in New Zealand, where he is playing for Canterbury after being granted dispensation by the European Central Bank. In his first limited-overs match for his birth province against Otago, he was bowled for two. It will be decided at the point, if Stokes is to be reinstated to the national team and, if possible, for the remainder of the Ashes series.

Avon and Somerset Police passed a file to the Crown Prosecution Service for "charging advice" last week.

Asked about the timing of any clarification of Stokes' situation, Bayliss said: "I've got absolutely no idea".

England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced England's squad for their upcoming ODI series against Australia.

Stokes's inclusion in the 16-man squad, which also includes his fit-again Durham team-mate Mark Wood, does not guarantee his involvement.

"With around 18 months to the start of the 2019 World Cup, our ODI side continues to make solid progress with series wins over the West Indies and South Africa last summer and a semifinal berth in the Champions Trophy", said James Whitaker, the European Central Bank selector.
