YouTube beefs up policing of extremist content

In an official blog post, Susan Wojcicki hailed the platform for being "a force for creativity, learning and access to information" but warned that "bad actors are exploiting our openness to mislead, manipulate, harass or even harm". Stricter criteria will be applied, staff will conduct more manual curation, and the team of ad reviewers will expand to ensure ads are only running where they should.

Going forward, she said that YouTube would be "carefully considering which channels and videos are eligible for advertising".

The decision comes after the popular video platform - which is owned by Google - faced increasing pressure in recent weeks over content targeting or involving children.

Last month, separate investigations by BBC News and The Times found paedophiles were posting indecent comments on videos of youngsters, evading discovery through flaws in YouTube's reporting system. The software is already catching 98 percent of the videos removed for violent extremism, the company said.

Apart from expanding the current strength, the company plans to take punitive measures about inappropriate comments by introducing new comment management tools and blocking mechanisms.

Apple will begin paying Ireland €13 billion in back taxes
The EU said it planned to refer Ireland to the European Court of Justice for failing to recover the money in back taxes from Apple.

"Since June, our trust and safety teams have manually reviewed almost two million videos for violent extremist content, helping train our machine-learning technology to identify similar videos in the future".

The technology has reviewed and flagged content that would have taken 180,000 people working 40 hours a week to assess, according to Wojcicki.

Be it the surplus of extremist content on its site that goes undetected, be it countless instances of child exploitation and abuse that parade around without penalty, and not to mention the utter vitriol of its comments section.

"Because we have seen these positive results, we have begun training machine-learning technology across other challenging content areas, including child safety and hate speech", she said.

The move is part of a broader effort by the company to improve its protection of users and rid the video-sharing website of extremist or offensive content after widespread criticism of its policing policies.
