Facebook Rolling Out Ad-Free Messenger Kids iOS App

"After talking to thousands of parents, associations like National PTA, and parenting experts in the United States, we found that there's a need for a messaging app that lets kids connect with people they love but also has the level of control parents want", Cheng said.

As of today, Messenger Kids is only launching on the iOS App Store.

But Facebook says parents have complete control of the app, through their own accounts, from which they must approve all of their children's contacts before kids can begin chatting.

The move opens up a new way for Facebook to compete with Snap's disappearing-photo and chat app, which is popular among younger teenagers.

Loren Cheng, a product manager at Facebook who led the Messenger Kids project, said that the company actually has a dedicated team at Facebook who looks at all the reports, and will proactively ban any account that is seen as harmful.
An important point to note is that Facebook has promised that it won't be collecting the children's data for ad targeting or marketing purposes, unlike the adult version of the app. Facebook has now decided to make this possible with the Messenger Kids app that is now rolling out in the US.

Once Messenger Kids has been set up, your child can make video calls and send messages to any of the contacts you've approved.

There's a simple reason Facebook is starting to focus on children: Kids are already using technology anyway.

Messenger Kids comes with a slew of controls for parents. So what, exactly, is Facebook's motive for opening things to younger children?

To use the app, parents must download it from the App Store and then authenticate it with their Facebook user name and password.

It is now only available on iOS in the United States, but will be rolled out to Google Play Store and Amazon App Store in the next few months.

Major tech firms have recently released more products that allow children to use their products within the limits of the privacy law - and reach more of the country's 48.8 million children under the age of 13 in the process. A child can't even create an account on his or her own - a parent must do it for them. Only parents have the ability to add friends or delete messages. It's created to be compliant with the Children's Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA).

The application is available for preview in the United States and will roll out to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch initially. With so many privacy concerns and children's online safety issues a paramount discussion, will parents be keen on allowing kids under 13 this sort of access to online social media? We'll let you know when that Android version eventually launches, but for now, head down to the comments section and give us your take on Messenger Kids. The company has also been in discussions with organizations such as the National PTA and Blue Star Families for coming up with the parental controls and decide the approach for a digital platform for children.
