NGT lifts ban on Delhi industry, trucks

The case gathered momentum as retired bureaucrat EAS Sarma filed another petition, challenging the hurried grant of environmental clearances by the state-level environment impact assessment authority (SEIAA), the Times of India reported.

However, Green Tribunal has taken some measures to address the apprehensions.

The green court said a fine of Rs 5 lakh will be imposed if the institutions fail to do so. Issuing the directions, a bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar noted that both CPCB and DPCC data had showed improvement in ambient air quality, but sprinkling of water would continue in the capital and adjoining areas, as it had helped lower pollution levels.

A group of farmers had also approached the NGT, challenging the pooling of fertile land.

Imposing a number of conditions, the NGT said, "the project proponent shall conduct or cause to be conducted a comprehensive study on hydro-geomorphology of the area with a view to effectively plan water retention ponds/reservoirs, storm water drains and their interconnectivity.", the NGT said. The supervisory committee would constantly check if the NGT guidelines are adhered to.

The Tribunal said in the directive: "The committee shall meet twice a month and deal with the applications of the schools and colleges expeditiously".

The tribunal directed schools and colleges to approach a committee constituted by it.
