United Nations to adopt Olympic Truce for PyeongChang Winter Olympics

The Organizing Committee for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games opened a Web site, hellopyeongchang.com, on Tuesday to better promote the games.

IOC President Thomas Bach says the 2018 edition of the Olympic Truce is a "deeply personal one" in a polarized world for a Games on a polarized peninsula. The Olympic Truce, which traces back to the Ekecheiria (a truce held during the Olympics in ancient Greece), has been an Olympic tradition since it passed the UN General Assembly in October 1993 and took force during the Lillehammer Winter Olympics the next year.

The resolution, adopted with a bang of the gavel by Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak to loud applause, urges United Nations member states to observe the truce from seven days before the games begin on February 9 until seven days after the Paralympic Winter Games end on March 18.

The United Nations General Assembly on Monday adopted a resolution calling for the peaceful running of the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea's PyeongChang.

"We welcome the North's participation in the Pyeongchang Olympic Games at any time in anticipation of North Korea's response to the peace on the Korean Peninsula and the peaceful development of Northeast Asia and the world".

Twins' Molitor, D-Backs' Lovullo win Manager of Year awards
Also receiving votes were Craig Counsell of the Brewers, Dusty Baker of the Nationals, and Joe Maddon of the Cubs. Molitor wins the honor in his third year with the organization, having come off a 59-win season in 2016.

The truce was passed by consensus in the General Assembly, including both North and South Korea.

Former figure skating champion Kim Yuna, a goodwill ambassador for the PyeongChang Winter Games, addressed the 193-member UN General Assembly that day, sharing her experience "in witnessing the power sport has in breaking down the walls of race, region, language and religion all around the world".

The resolution urges countries to give safe passage to all players, officers and officials participating in the Olympics, to have safe access and allow them to participate at the Games, as well as mobilising youth around the world for peace. "At the same time, we do know that this may be a very last-minute decision by North Korea", said South Korean Sports Minister Do Jong-hwan at an Olympics preview event in NY. With inter-Korean relations at a high point that summer, the North and South Korean Olympic delegations made a joint entrance to Stadium Australia.

"The Olympic Charter states the goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity", she said, in a speech ahead of the passing of the resolution. "Indeed, PyeongChang represents perhaps the most honest effort to cross the frozen border between the South and North and to foster a peaceful environment".

The International Olympic Committee is urging North Korea to participate, which could help ease safety and security concerns about the Games arising from Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile tests. "The Republic of Korea is ready to welcome the world". In order to stop that, we need to take a bold functional approach on issues such as reopening the Kaesong Complex and tourism to Mount Kumgang. It simply said "Korea". The lucky 20 will receive a gift of the "Moon Jae-in watch" which includes the president's signature.
