Texas State University suspends Greek life following fraternity pledge's death

Trauth suspended all Greek fraternity and sorority chapters at Texas State as a result of the tragedy. He was staying at the off-campus apartment complex with four other fraternity members.

Authorities said during a Tuesday news conference that it is still too early to tell if hazing played a role in Ellis' death. Kelly Earnest said witnesses at the scene indicated they were drinking the night before and there had been a fraternity party.

In response to Coffey's death, the university instituted an alcohol ban, ended the recruitment of any new Greek life members, and prohibited all Greek social events, including tailgate parties and chapter meetings.

Texas State's Greek organizations must register all social events through the Greek Affairs Office.

Phi Kappa Psi's Texas State chapter switched its Twitter account to private following Ellis' death, ABC San Antonio affiliate KSAT reported. No arrests have been made at this time.

Matthew McKinley Ellis, who was pledging to the university's Phi Kappa Psi chapter, was found at the Millennium Apartments, less than two miles from the Central Texas campus, after 11 a.m. Monday. Friends of Ellis called 911, and Ellis was pronounced dead after first responders were unable to revive him, Trauth said.

"My thoughts are with his family, friends, and the Texas State Community", she said. "I think that would've been a smart move, but, I don't know, I just don't see all of the Greek life being suspended as a good idea considering the good stuff that has come out of some of them", said Haley Wares who also attends Texas State.

Trauth added that she was suspending all Greek fraternity and sorority activities while the university completes a review of the Greek system.
