Magnitude 5.4 quake strikes city of Pohang + 'Dispatch' photos of natural disaster aftermath

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said a magnitude five-point-four quake hit nine kilometers north of Pohang's northern district in North Gyeongsang Province at around 2:29 p.m. on Wednesday.

South Korea was hit by the country's second biggest ever natural disaster of 5.4- magnitude, with no serious casualty being reported yet, the weather service said Wednesday.

North Korea and South Korea are located in the region known as the Ring of Fire - which extends around the Pacific Ocean and is a hotspot for natural disaster activity.

South Korea rattled by rare 5.4-magnitude quake
The quake was centred off the coast about 9.3 kilometres (5.8 miles) northwest of the port city of Pohang, according to the U.S. No injuries or major damage has been reported, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

The weather service revised the magnitude from an initial 5.5 to 5.4 after a rigorous analysis.

The epicentre was about 6 km north of Pohang, and the tremors were felt across the country. USGS reported the tremor struck at a depth of 10km at 2.29pm (1.29pm, Singapore time).

According to TV footage, some buildings were externally damaged and windows were broken. Students were evacuated from school buildings and people stood on the streets after dashing out of office buildings and apartments. Nuclear power plants in Gyeongju and the surrounding areas are reported to be safe and unaffected by the quake.

South Korean President Moon Jae-In, on his way to Seoul after attending the Asean summit in Manila, is set to hold an emergency meeting upon arrival, his office said.
