Italy creates 'lost generation' of soccer stars with 2018 World Cup miss

The Italian football association (FIGC) have made contact with Carlo Ancelotti about taking over as national team manager following their failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, according to reports.

Failure to qualify in 1958 had come full circle in sixty years, their final appearances in 1970 and 1994 plus victories in 1982 and 2006 sandwiched in between their latest exit ahead of the 2018 tournament in Russian Federation.

Captain Gianluigi Buffon, defender Andrea Barzagli and midfielder Daniele De Rossi each announced their retirements from the national team after the playoff loss.

He had kept 68 clean sheets in his 175 global caps, making 14 World Cup appearances along the way.

But Zoff, who resigned as Italy coach in the wake of a poor Euro 2000 campaign, did not rush to call for the head of current incumbent Gian Piero Ventura.

He motioned that Lorenzo Insigne should warm up instead of him, a winger widely regarded as one of Italy's hottest attacking talents that was inexplicably sitting next to him on the bench.

"They are the ones on the pitch who have to make the difference in a game like this". "The competition gets tougher and more closed each time".

"In football terms, it's the biggest disappointment of my life", the 36-year-old said. (Leonardo) Bonucci or also De Rossi or the others.

"I took that decision after careful consideration".

Italy has historically been reluctant to use younger players despite a trend in that direction, as evidenced by the recent success of a young Germany squad that won the 2014 World Cup.

Italy reached the final again in 1994 but lost to Brazil 3-2 on penalties after the match had ended goalless.

"Italy, this is the apocalypse", ran a headline on the website of sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport.
