49ers releasing All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman

General manager John Lynch said he and coach Kyle Shanahan met with Bowman and it became clear that going in different directions was the best move for both sides.

It appears that All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman may not be in the Bay Area much longer, at least in red and gold colors.

The 49ers had been shopping Bowman before the news of the release surfaced per Rapoport, with his $6.75 million base salary thought to be the reason why San Francisco was unable to garner any interest. The two were key to San Francisco's run of three straight trips to the NFC title game and one Super Bowl appearance.

The 29-year-old linebacker also suffered an Achilles injury last season, so he may no longer be as great as he once was, but he was still leading his team in total tackles this season after five games.

"I don't know, man", Bowman told reporters Sunday about coming off the field.

Pro Football Focus ranked him the No. 63 overall linebacker among 86 qualifiers.

Bowman was drafted in the third round by the 49ers in 2010 and has played for the team since with three Pro Bowl entries and four First-team All-Pro vote-ins. He had 38 tackles and one pass defended in five games this season, and his career line stands at 808 tackles, 12.5 sacks, four interceptions, seven forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries, impressive numbers considering he missed all of the 2014 season due to injury and then most of the 2016 season, as well.

Bowman now enters free agency for the first time in his career and is likely to have a wealth of suitors. Shanahan confirmed on Friday that when Foster returns, he will play in place of Bowman.

The Colts have had some struggles in the middle of their defense, especially when it comes to coverage but even if he isn't used in that role, Bowman would provide a veteran presence to an extremely young defense.
