Feminists tear into Women's March for having Sanders headline convention

The Women's March is holding its first National Women's Convention in four decades.

Not only is Sanders not a woman, but he tried to ruin the chances of the first ever female presidential candidate from a major party. 'You couldn't find any inspiring, powerful, woman to give the opening speech?

In a follow-up message, Messing went a step farther in her withering critique, writing: 'It's Marching backwards. Men have "spoken" for us for eons'.

The Women's Convention will begin October 27 in Detroit and will last three days. We are thrilled that Rep Maxine Waters and Senator Sanders will be speaking at the Women's Convention. Other participants include actresses Amber Tamblyn and Piper Perabo; Rep Maxine Waters, a Democrat from California; and OH politician Nina Turner, among others.

The Women's Convention is run by the leaders of January's Women's March movement, which saw five million women join protests around the world.

Women's March co-founder Tamika Mallory defended their headliner, insisting he knows how to galvanize Millennials.

Sanders said that he is "honored" to join the women at the conference upon the release of the event, saying that supporting women's leadership is vital to progressive causes.

But not everyone welcomed the decision to give a prominent role to a man at a women's conference with the motto 'Reclaiming Our Time'. So, who did they get to headline opening night? Sen.

MSNBC political analyst Joan Walsh remarked sarcastically: 'Might just be me, but I'd have loved to see a woman keynote the Women's Convention'.

"We invited many elected officials to our convention that align with the objective and mission of our existence - to harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative change".

The announcement of Sanders' speech at the conference with the theme "Reclaiming our Time" was nearly immediately followed by widespread criticism on social media and by leading organisations, including EMILY'S List.
