Aston Martin DB11 Volante Drops the Top in Time for Spring

Aston Martin unveiled the DB11 on Friday, a luxury convertible that could help extend a turnaround at the British carmaker that is being helped by cost-cutting and surging sales of its DB11 luxury sports auto. Other options include a tracker system, a self-parking feature, blind-spot monitoring, a heated steering wheel and two premium stereos - one by Aston and one by Bang & Olufsen. It has chosen to launch with the lighter V8 engine rather than a V12 to ensure handling is as keen as possible.

Powered by a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo 503bhp V8, the DB11 Volante boasts an 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, electric power steering and limited-slip differential with dynamic torque vectoring. You can also have wood veneer or carbon-fibre finishes for the back of the front seats.

"The challenge of creating a convertible vehicle is retaining structural and dynamic integrity", said Max Szwaj, Aston Martin Chief Technical Officer. The convertible sports auto benefits from three-stage powertrain and chassis modes, working in ideal harmony with the eight-speed automatic transmission, electric power steering, and limited-slip differential with dynamic torque vectoring.

Buyers will be able to choose from three soft top colors: bordeaux red, black silver or grey silver.

"With the DB11 Volante we have maximized the advantages of the DB11's all-new bonded structure to underpin our new Volante with a structure that's 26 kg (57 pounds) lighter and 5 percent stiffer than its predecessor", stated Max Szwaj, Aston Martin Chief Technical Officer.

Volante's hood takes just 14 seconds to lower and 16 to close and can be operated remotely from the key, or on the move at speeds of up to 31mph with a 31mph headwind.

Prices for the Volante start at £159,900 in the United Kingdom, €199,000 in Europe and $216,495 in the US.

The £159,900 vehicle will get its first deliveries in the first quarter of 2018. The open roof GT is expected to account for half of all DB11 sales worldwide, Aston Martin CEO Dr. Andy Palmer told Business Insider.
