Wednesday's telephone call between Tillerson and Turkey's top diplomat Mevlut Cavusoglu came after the USA ambassador to Turkey said Tillerson held talks to try and resolve a major diplomatic break between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

Hours later, Ankara issued a similar suspension on visas for US citizens.

The U.S. suspended all non-immigration visa services in its missions in Turkey following the detention of the employee identified as Metin Topuz, who was arrested for espionage charges.

The phone call is the highest level of contact since the suspension of visa services by both countries.
