Oculus Rift bundle gets permanent price cut

Facebook is increasingly exploring ways to make Oculus relevant for businesses.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, at the event, launched a new mobile headset named Oculus Go. While it looks like the company has used an LCD panels with a faster refresh rate, something that is of utmost importance when it comes to VR experience, we're not sure if it matches or surpasses the 90Hz displays used on the Rift.

The Oculus Go will straddle the market between the Rift and the Samsung Gear, a $129 headset that runs on some of Samsung's higher-priced phones.

Indeed, you have to hand it to Zuckerberg after an ignominious start to the week where a crass, cringe-worthy VR tour of hurricane-whacked Puerto Rico invited a lot of criticism over poor taste.

Will this be the Christmas of VR or just another failed hype attempt?

The road to get where we are now after Facebook acquired Oculus two years ago for $2bn has been a bumpy ride, rocked by IP lawsuits and founder departures. Speakers are built directly in the headset, giving users a wire-free VR experience.

Facebook-owned Oculus is one of the two giants in VR right now, alongside HTC with its Vive headset. A a price drop wouldn't be necessary if people were actually buying the Rift. Facebook VP of VR Hugo Barra in his own words, describes it as "hands-down the easiest way to get people into VR", per Variety. However, the new headset will be available next year and aims to make a new category for the virtual reality industry. However, if you want, to listen to the audio privately, you can do that by connecting your earphones or headphones using the 3.5mm audio port on the Oculus Go.

Another plus is Gear VR and Oculus Go apps are binary compatible so developers building games for Gear VR are already building for Oculus Go.

Then theres a new VR headset – the Oculus Go – and finally, an update on the Santa Cruz prototype. There is, however, no release date for the Santa Cruz motion controllers.

Oculus also announced an Oculus for Business bundle yesterday, which will include a Rift headset, Touch controllers, three sensors and three face sponges, as well as dedicated customer support and special extended licenses and warranties to set up the headset. Both of which are very important in the virtual reality experience.

According to the company, there have been 100m downloads of apps that work with Oculus, which is keeping Zuckerberg optimistic about the future of VR. In the future, we'll open up new possibilities for community and co-presence, letting you hang out, play, and explore with others.
