The spacewalking duo switched their spacesuits to internal battery power at 7:56 a.m. EDT (1156 GMT) to begin the planned six-and-a-half hour excursion. As the space station approached Italy, Mission Control urged the spacewalkers to take some photos for their crewmate, Paolo Nespoli.

They'll continue working on the Latching End Effector (LEE), a "hand" at the end of the Canadarm2 robotic arm, which they replaced last week, and install some new high-definition cameras outside the space station.

The second of the trio spacewalk series went off smoothly and came to an end after 6 hours and 26 minutes. The first spacewalk was successfully completed on October 5, by both Bresnik and Vande Hei. The astronauts also lubricated the latching end effector of the robotic arm during this spacewalk. Actually, the latches, or hands, are located on each end of the Canadian-built robot arm, and they are used to grab the arriving U.S. cargo ships and also enable the robot arm to move around the orbiting lab. The camera that was replaced on Tuesday was adding pink hue in the images, thus degrading the quality of the images. NASA spokesman Rob Navias described the camera equipment as offering "new eyes" to the orbiting outpost. Expedition 53 astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Joe Acaba will also "stand" on Canadarm2 during spacewalks on October 10 and October 18. EVA will be performed by Randy Bresnik and Joe Acaba and will cover lubricating parts of LEE grappler, regulations of brackets and rollers, replacing DEXTRE fuse and removing cover from Main Bus Switching Unit.
