Here's how wildfires up north are affecting people in Merced County

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Air Quality (AQI) ranked San Francisco air as "unhealthy for sensitive groups" (the orange parts of the map) and predicts "unhealthy" (crimson red) for Thursday.

The district issued a smoke advisory yesterday (Oct. 10) because of the wildfires, which have burned tens of thousands of acres, and later in the day issued a health advisory and Spare the Air alert.

Continuing wind and wildfires today may cause residents to experience trouble breathing, coughing, headaches and chest pain. The current situation is a result of very unhealthy air quality from the wildfires in the North Bay and is causing unprecedented levels of air pollution throughout the Bay Area. "PM2.5 is so small, about 1/30 the width of a human hair, that it can penetrate deep into the lungs". The blazes are sending a cloud of ash and smoke over the bay, threatening residents with polluted air. "It will probably hit the central valley and the East Bay tonight and tomorrow." said Thomas Hall, Sacramento Air Quality Management.
