Azure Data Box is Microsoft's answer to AWS Snowball

SQL Server 2017, which adds compatibility between cloud-based and on-premises versions of SQL Server to make migrations to the cloud easier, is now generally available. The tools will help developers both build new artificial intelligence (AI) models and use existing ones built by Microsoft or third parties.

SQL Data Warehouse will deliver a new, optimized for compute performance tier, significantly improving the performance of analytics in the cloud, with workloads running up to 2x. On the agenda are updates to licensing terms, Azure Stack hardware is now shipping, new hybrid cloud benefits, and a lot more. This tier also scales up to 30,000 compute Data Warehouse Units.

Microsoft announced that it will bring Azure Cosmos DB database server to its serverless offering, Azure Functions, for event-based, serverless systems.

Between all of the other announcements from day one of Microsoft's Ignite 2017, you'd be forgiven for not noticing a change that was unveiled with not much fanfare: Azure's new logo and tagline. That said, the new identity can be seen in Microsoft's newly released so-called Azure manifesto, linked below.

Microsoft is adding in new security and privacy protections for Azure, including Azure confidential computing, which enables encryption of data while in use, and an Azure DDoS protection service, which monitors the public IP addresses of resources with Azure, learns an application's normal traffic patterns, and automatically mitigates a DDoS attack when detected.

According to TechCrunch, the Experimentation Sevice will help developers to "quickly train and deploy machine learning experiments".

Earlier this summer, Microsoft announced that they would be acquiring Cloudyn and we are now seeing the fruits of that purchase materializing as Azure Cost Management. Microsoft has also completed the integration work following its acquisition of Cloudyn in June, allowing Azure users to get a better handle on their cloud spending through Cloudyn's technology, which will be available to all Azure users for free.

Developers building apps on Microsoft Azure using serverless technologies can now link those event-driven apps with Cosmos DB, Microsoft plans to announce Monday at its Ignite conference for technology professionals.
